Summer, where did you go?

Disc Dog Competition  Comments Off on Summer, where did you go?

I haven’t posted all summer, is that possible?  Where did the time go?

After our first disc dog competition, my husband is hooked.  He has practiced almost every day with Izzy and she can flat out jump and catch the regulation frisbee nearly 100% of the time.  It’s incredible, considering she only weighs about 13 pounds and is 12.5 inchs tall.  She is sooooo athletic and has focus out the gazoo.

Fancy is now 10 months old and has also learned to catch the frisbee and is starting to jump a little for the high ones.  She is lower to the ground and doesn’t run as fast, but it’s coming as she matures.  I’d say she is catching about 80% of the time if the discs are steady and at the right speed.  Her eye is certainly developing.

Ike likes to get it once and then go off and lay in the shade guarding his possession from the girls!

I had intended to breed Izzy this summer and of course, both girls came in season at the same time and the wrong time for me to be able to dedicate my time to puppies.  Izzy just waited too late for me so I’m hoping she’ll cycle a little closer to 9 months rather than the 11 she went last time.  Since Fancy is around, perhaps her chemistry will get Izzy on a different schedule.

I’m so proud to announce that Cattle Call Fancy Don’t Let Me Down of Alangus strutted her stuff in the show ring at the IABCA Kentucky show this past weekend.  We returned home with four Best in Breed Mini Aussie Puppy awards, two Best in Herding Group Puppy awards, and one Reserve Best in Show Puppy.  The icing is that Fancy earned her International Champion Puppy title!!

My son and I traveled over toward Kansas City for the ASDR dog show this past weekend, taking Fancy, my little Aussie girl, and Gus, his Border Collie puppy.

The show was my first experience in the Conformation ring and Fancy was on her best behavior.  The judge was very congenial and helpful since I was a novice handler and the other breeders friendly, giving me suggestions for showing off her best features.  Since we had some experienced competition and very nice dogs, Fancy did not place in her event but did earn her required points for her Level 1 Championship.  I was proud of her both for her showing and also for her development compared to the other dogs.

Fancy measured in at 14 1/4 so just over the limit from toy to mini.  I wasn’t surprised but I had not had an official measurement.  She’s a stout little dog and is filling out very nicely.  The best part is that she’s very friendly and mingled and mixed with the people and dogs very well.

I have to admit that I caught the show bug so I’m hoping I can work in the IABCA event in Lexington in June.

Thanks to everyone that worked to put on the American Stock Dog show this year!

This weekend is the infamous Oaks and Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby here in Louisville Kentucky (Alangus Toy Aussies is just up the river from Louisville).  Weather is absolutely gorgeous here today, a little windy, but azure blue skies and shades of green everywhere.  Hoping it will hold out for the races! And, they’re OFF!!!!

I’m a Believer

My sermon for the day has to do with feeding your dogs premium dog food.  I’m a believer in high protein, low or no grain, food.  Proof is in the bag!

My oldest mini Australian Shepherd left me at age 16 1/2 and my German Shepherd at 14 1/2 and I attribute it to feeding them high protein, high quality dog food along with a few supplements along the way.  Check this link for my local veterinarian’s discussion of pet food   http://www.alangusaussies.com/index_files/Page564.htm

Again, I am no veterinarian, but I know what has given me good results with my dogs over the last 25 years.  I give my dogs daily fish oil and NuVet Plus http://www.alangusaussies.com/index_files/AvailablePuppies.htm as a supplement to their premium food.  I can also share my favorite dog foods if anyone is interested but there is no “one” that is the best, just ingredients that provide a more healthy diet for your pet.

As my two older dogs became geriatric, I began giving them LubriSyn which is a miracle cure for arthitic pain and glucosamine/chondroitin supplements.

Vet bills are very expensive, a sick and unhealthy dog is sad, and the small cost of providing good food will far offset the health issues of feeding “corn chips” to your pets on a daily basis (ie food with corn as the main ingredient).

Tummy Aches Happen

My little female toy Aussie has been under the weather for a couple of days with a tum tum ache.  A couple of weeks ago Fancy had the same symptoms and a vet’s visit didn’t bring any answers.  I went back to advice that Fancy’s breeder had given me and found some Metronidazole tablets (Flagyl) in my stash from another vet, another dog, another time.  That seems to be curing the problem.  After 2 days, her tail is wagging and she’s looking for her Frisbee once again.  And…starting to eat.

Had I not had the Flagyl, I would have used Fish Zole which is the same medication and can be purchased at a minimal price from pet supply stores without a prescription.  (Disclaimer- I am not a veterinarian)

Just because I haven’t posted doesn’t mean that life is dull here at Alangus Toy Aussies!

Training has been in full swing for all three little Aussies and we are making really good progress.

We also are working hard to get Fancy ready for the American Stock Dog (ASDR) event in late May.  That will be my first time to participate in conformation and I’m nervous and excited to learn the ropes.  My adult son is taking his Border Collie puppy along for the ride and may put him in the ring as well.

Spring has arrived in Kentucky so the Frisbees have been flying and the little wading pool is ready for some warmer temps.  Izzy is a Frisbee fanatic and Fancy has followed behind her enough now to get the idea and sometimes snatch one away occasionally.

Toy Australian Shepherds are definitely spunky, but that’s what makes them special!  No lazy lap dogs in my house!

We have worked inside on obedience all winter and are so ready to get back onto the outdoor agility course for additional training.

While Izzy is still working hard on her more advanced obedience work, Ike will be starting back into agility.  Last summer was his first time to work agility and he was a happy happy dog.  Since I’m a novice, I have to build my confidence so he doesn’t get the wrong signals from me.  Once that’s accomplished, he, no doubt, is going to perform well because he loves to jump and dash and does not fear the obstacles.

Fancy is growing and maturing so nicely.  She is doing well on her potty training (except when I mess up) and plays until she’s totally tuckered out.  She is in her puppy obedience class with about 15 other young ‘uns of all shapes and sizes and it’s a hoot to watch them.  Although young, she is very focused and very obedient.  Could be because she LOVES to eat!!

I’m happy to announce that Izzy had her OFA Prelim and PennHip x-rays this week and the vet gave me the indication that all looks good.

I’m excited about the ASDR show in Missouri in May.  This will be my first show to participate and it will be fun to meet everyone.

Ah Spring is in the air in Kentucky!!

Snow in the Bluegrass

The last couple of weeks have been busy scooping snow in Kentucky and also working hard with the pups on their training.  Fancy is learning quickly from the other dogs and will be starting her puppy obedience class in another week or two.  I have continued to take her to play at the training center to meet new people and we’ve been practicing her stack and walking on lead.  So far, she goes with the flow and still has a puppy smile on her face.

At 12 weeks, Fancy’s potty training is right on schedule.  She seldom makes a mistake and when she does, I take the full responsibility for not taking her out on time.  She has gained weight and her fur is only getting fluffier is that’s possible.  With the agility equipment set up in the basement, she’s found hide and seek in the tunnel to be a really fun game and prances along the little dog walk like she’s done it forever.

Izzy is now in an advanced obedience class.  There were several new dogs in the last session so she was a little nervous since some of them were off leash at times and rambunctious.  The dynamics always change for a couple of classes with new dogs so hopefully this week she’ll be back at her confident self.  It made me a little off key too, so I’m sure she picked up on it because she’s super sensitive to my emotions.  I don’t like it when people let their dogs run up w/out proper introductions…not polite of them.

If it’s possible for a dog to shrug, my male is rolling his eyes with a shrug.  He seems to be thinking…oh no another puppy to train, and a girl at that.  He’s been super tolerant of the little razor teeth but quick to let Fancy know what is acceptable just as he did Izzy at that age.  He is such a good dog and happy as long as he’s near my side.

Paperwork is in for the ASDR event in May!!  I’m excited about learning the ropes and seeing how Fancy does.  I wish I could get Izzy ready for obedience competition, but not sure I can.

Nice stack

The last two weeks I have been taking Fancy to Conformation Walk-ins at my local training center.  She is happy to meet the other dogs of all breeds and sizes and seems totally at ease when examined on the table.  With a yummy liver treat in my hand, she stacks her little legs and body nicely for review.  I’m super happy with her attitude and even the die-hard standard Aussie folks have commented on her “look”.

At home, my three Aussies are playing hard.  Because of Fancy’s little razor teeth, she occasionally gets in trouble and her buddies have to put her in her place.  No problem, she pops right back up and is ready to romp some more.

Potty training is going great.  The 2-3 mistakes have been mine and she’s quick to communicate that she needs to go out.  That makes me a believer in the breeders methods of using a potty pan for her puppies when they are still in their confined space.

My basement is the dog play area and the tunnel and walk board are Fancy’s favorites.  Watch out agility folks, here she comes!!

Our goal this week is meeting new friends wherever we go, Home Depot, Lowes, the training center, the pet store, and even at the window at Starbucks.  Because Aussies are such a pack breed, now is my window of opportunity for her to meet and sniff and kiss all kinds of people.  So far, Fancy is happy and laid back and eager to snuggle whoever comes along.

Her visit to the vet found her to be 5 pounds of fluff and healthy in all regards!  Good job Gerri at Cattle Call Aussies for growing her well!

I don’t think we’re ready for reality TV, but we are now a family of 3 Mini/Toy Aussies and the fun is rolling at our house.

I picked up Cattle Call Fancy Don’t Let Me Down at Alangus Wednesday morning at the Louisville airport coming in on a Continental red-eye flight (great for puppies).  As her breeder told me, she is a happy puppy and was ready to play as soon as the crate door opened.  I commend the breeder, Cattle Call Aussies, on sending me a perfect Toy Aussie puppy and Continental for a safe and seemingly uneventful ride.

We detoured on the way home by Feeders Supply to give her just a few of those important socialization snuggles from strangers and then to meet Ike and Izzy, who took her right in as though they had been waiting for their little sister to arrive forever.  Once home, of course, we had to do a photo shoot for the webpage but she took it all in stride and there were no shivers of nervousness at any of my silliness which makes me VERY happy.  A nap and she was ready to explore her new forever home.

Her first night required only one potty break, but of course she was snuggled on the couch with skin mommy and Ike, who’s job it is to make everyone feel comfortable.

Fancy is in the air coming in from Houston, her last stopover, as I write.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone pampered her at that layover and she’s had a good flight.  It’s cold here, around 20 degrees, so she may have the shivers as she comes into the  Louisville airport.

I’ve only had one other puppy flown, Izzy, and she arrived and happy and spunky…which indicated her adult personality.  Reputable breeders tell me that they have had no trouble shipping by air, but this time Fancy had to change planes so it’ll be nice when I pick up her crate and know she made it okay.

Alangus Aussies, my name, comes from the family farm in Southern Kentucky.  When I was a child, my parents asked me to name the farm and with a child’s mental processes, I took the AL from alfalfa which covered a large portion of the tillable fields and added ANGUS which was the breed of cattle to whom the alfalfa was fed, creating Alangus Acres.  As an afterthought, we realized that AL are also my father’s initials so the name became even more appropriate.

Only a few of the fields are now used to grow alfalfa, but Dad continues to have exceptional Angus cattle of which some have won state championship titles.

I talked to the breeder of my new puppy yesterday and after the 2 little females were evaluated, she suggested I do a switch and take the other one which she thinks will be higher quality for show.  I know that I’ll love either one, so it’s best for me to take her advice and get a good start.  Little Fancy is flying in from Oregon on the 28th!!  I’m hoping for moderate weather to hold out, but we’ll see.

I spent several hours yesterday with Izzy (Queen Isabella) working Obedience and Agility.  We are still at the Novice level, but I will be the only deterrent to success.  She has a spark in her eye and superior focus.  She wants to work soooo badly and has such a happy face when we accomplish the command correctly.

Not everyone has the same interests, but I can’t imagine a loving dog owner not enjoying training their dog once they get started.  It’s almost addictive because you see a bit of success and it makes you want to push to the next level.  So much fun!!

My current dogs are Double R Ike and Murrays Queen Isabella.  I’m considering Cattle Call Fancy Don’t Let Me Down for the little girl, since her sire’s name is Cattle Call Blue Genes.  I’m not sure if that makes a connection to anyone else, but somehow did to me.

I’m certainly hoping she’s “top notch” and doesn’t let me down in any way either for intelligence, looks or personality.

I received word today that my female black tri puppy will be arriving the end of January.  I can smell puppy breath already, but do realize my work is cut out for me.  My two other dogs are “in training”, so I must be disciplined in order to give them all their due time in the limelight.

I’ve spent a good deal of time in front of the computer screen researching kennels all around the United States that breed and show Toy and Mini Australian Shepherds.  I am eager for the opportunity to attend some shows this Spring and to meet some of these breeders in person and to see their dogs.

Toy Aussies are a terrific pet dog for folks that want an intelligent breed with that focus that comes from the herding breeds but in a small package that is more portable and takes up less “space” in the house.  In my case, the “less space” just means additional dogs much to the chagrin of my husband who has a “one-dog philosophy”.

I’m excited to be able to announce the launching of my website www.AlangusAussies.com and also my hobby breeding program for mini and toy Australian Shepherds in Kentucky.  I currently have a young male mini Aussie and a young female toy Aussie, and have been researching kennels from all the over the United States to find another female that fits the criteria for a “keeper”.

At this point, I have made a deposit on a black tri toy female from Cattle Call Aussies in Oregon and because of her champion bloodlines and also the true Aussie look in a small package, I think I’ve made the right choice.  I know that I don’t want a large number of dogs because mine are family pets and I try to do agility and obedience training with each one individually.

Drop back in and I’ll keep you posted on what’s happening in Kentucky and also with my acquisition of my new puppy.
